WooCommerce AI Product Copy -
8 hrs Saved Every Week
A UK online retailer with 800+ SKUs was spending 8+ hours a week manually writing product descriptions. Copy was inconsistent across the catalogue and many pages had thin content penalised by Google. Integrated OpenAI GPT-4o directly into the WordPress admin product descriptions, SEO meta titles and structured benefit bullets generated automatically on upload. Human review step built in before publishing.
The Brief
A UK online retailer selling lifestyle and home products had grown their catalogue to over 800 SKUs. The problem: product descriptions were written by whoever had time, which meant wildly inconsistent quality, missing keywords and entire product categories with two-sentence descriptions that Google was treating as thin content.
Their content team was spending 8–10 hours per week on product copy and still falling behind. New arrivals were going live with placeholder descriptions because writing proper copy took longer than sourcing the products.
The brief: integrate AI into the existing WordPress setup so that when a product is added to WooCommerce, a full SEO-ready description, a meta title and a set of benefit bullets are generated automatically before the product is reviewed and published. The content team keeps editorial control; the AI does the first draft.
"We're drowning in product copy. By the time we've written descriptions for this week's arrivals, we're already behind on next week's. Half our catalogue has thin content warnings in Search Console."
Project Phases
Audited the existing catalogue - 847 products, 312 with descriptions under 100 words, 89 with no description at all. Reviewed the best-performing product pages on the site to understand what good copy looked like for this specific audience. Spent the majority of week one on prompt engineering: building system prompts that produced copy in the client's brand voice, included the right keywords naturally, generated proper benefit-led bullet points, and stayed within Google's helpful content guidelines. Tested against 40 real products before agreeing the prompts were production-ready.
Built a custom WordPress plugin no third-party AI plugin, no subscription, direct OpenAI API integration. Plugin hooks into WooCommerce product save action. When a product is saved as Draft, the plugin sends product name, category, attributes and any existing notes to GPT-4o. Three things are generated: a 200–300 word product description in the brand voice, an SEO meta title under 60 characters, and 5 benefit bullets. All three populate the relevant WooCommerce and Yoast SEO fields automatically. Product stays in Draft until a human reviews and approves.
Built a lightweight review queue in the WordPress admin a custom admin page showing all products with AI-generated content awaiting review. Editors see the product, the AI draft, and can approve, edit or reject in one screen. Reject sends it back to the queue with a note. Built rate limiting on the API calls batched imports can generate up to 20 descriptions per minute without hitting OpenAI rate limits. Cost tracking dashboard showing monthly API spend.
Rolled out to existing catalogue in batches - 50 products per day, reviewed by the content team before publishing. Entire back catalogue processed in 3 weeks post-launch. Staff trained on the review workflow in a single 90-minute session. One month post-launch: 8 hours of weekly copy time reduced to under 45 minutes for review and approval. Thin content warnings in Search Console dropped by 73% within 60 days.
